rolling across the country. we are keeping you very busy, phyllis. >> this weather is just relentless. good morning, ereka. good morning, everyone. parts of the midwest from wichita, kansas, all the way to indianapolis are seeing more heavy snow this morning as we deal with the winter weather that doesn't want to end. >> on i-25 near johnston, colorado, a fiery collision between a tanker truck and a car. >> looks like the propane was caught on fire with people. you can't even describe what it looked like. you can't even describe it. >> reporter: along with it a massive pile-up. >> four or five semis and, like, 40 cars. truck drivers on the road, it's tough. i never see anything like this. >> reporter: one wrecked vehicle was pulled after another out of the tangled pile of steel. several people were hospitalized, but police say though one was killed. >> it's the worst thing i have ever seen. >> down the road heading to

denver, about eight inches of snow clogged the streets creating a giant travel headache. are from there the storm headed east, essentially following the famous i-70 across the midwest. in wichita, kansas, the temperature dropped overnight making sure the snow would hang around today. again in topeka, it was a bitter night with snowy conditions shutting down many major roads, including stretches of i-70. and going into kansas city, a chilly blanket of snow fell over the streets. today the storm is still baring east bringing another unwelcomed blast of winter weather. >> we are looking at a lot of snow to continue through parts of especially indianapolis today. that is going to be a spot where we'll see the jackpot for highest snowfall totals. you can see the winter storm warnings extend all through the plains and into the midwest. heavy snow is now falling across kansas city. this is going to move towards st. louis. eventually up into parts of the chicago area and indianapolis will see that heavy snow take hold.

they've not always had a great relationship, but that relationship is very strong country to country, no matter who the leader is, and it's particularly important because of the issue of iran and syria. no doubt, the obama white house will have to be dealing with. >> he is back wanting to deal with domestic issues including gun control. after sandy hook we all understood there was a narrow window to get change, meaningful change in terms of gun laws. what has happened now in terms of the assault weapons ban, and where all this goes? >> well, the question is whether the moment is effectively lost. i think that's a real question inside the white house among democrats and gun control supporters. the assault weapons ban will get a vote, but it's not going to pass. the big focus is on background checks, and the big political focus is not going away. i sat down with new york city mayor michael bloomberg who talked about his own big push to spend money to target lawmakers. he has taken names based on how they vote on the assault weapons ban. >> i think i have a responsibility, and i think you and all of your viewers have responsibilities to try to make

good morning. looking live at a very pretty start to the day in san francisco. just a little bit of haze there in the distance. what does this mean for today? let's find out. a forecast that hopefully is nice through the weekend. >> yeah. it looks pretty good. in fact, if you're going to find the warmest day of the next seven days it's coming today which is pretty nice. despite the fact it's a little chilly in the north bay, upper 30s around fairfield. high clouds drifting by. patches of low clouds possible at times especially on the coast for the afternoon. you'll see temperatures once we get out of the low clouds, mostly sunny skies except along the immediate coastline. temperatures today in the trivalley area south of san jose briefly in the low to mid-70s. mid-60s elsewhere. wednesday chance of showers. best chance of rain comes in as we head towards friday and next weekend temperatures cooling down as well. >> thank you very much, rob. new this morning all lanes of interstate 580 in oakland are once again open after a man was hit and killed on the freeway

overnight. chp says the man was hit by a car on eastbound 580 near duten avenue in oakland just before 12:30 this morning. the three right lanes were blocked for hours while investigators were on the scene trying to figure out how the man ended up on the freeway. investigators say he may have been trying to run across lanes or perhaps may have fallen from a nearby overpass. new this morning on -- new detail on a deadly murder suicide at quantico training base in virginia earlier this week. two of the marines who were killed including the alleged gunman were from the bay area. the suspected gunman, 25-year-old sergeant lopez is from pacifica. a highly decorated marine who served in iraq and afghanistan before becoming a trainer at quantico. the female victim is 19-year-old lance corporal sarah castermata. she is from oakley and was promoted to lance corporal just last month.

sergeant lopez also killed corporal jacob woolly in mississippi. nbc news has learned the three were involved in a long triangle. all worked at the officer candidate school. the mayhem continues this morning for the suspect wanted for stabbing a woman to death in broad daylight in san jose. investigators say 25-year-old juan ramirez killed a san jose mother on friday. allegedly the crime happened in the parking lot of the woman's apartment complex right across the street from the sheriff's department. ramirez had allegedly been stalking 29-year-old sandra cruz gonzalez for two years and she has an active restraining order against him. >> she was doing all of the right things. she was contacting the police department. she was reporting these criming. she was pulling out restraining orders trying to protect herself from this individual. it's very unfortunate this happened. because it appeared that she was doing everything she could do to avoid it. >> investigators say ramirez may be headed to mexico, possibly driving a dark green 1996 pickup truck, a toyota one like the one you see here on your screen.

possible down in the southeast in that area in red, across mainly northern florida and georgia. hail is going to be a big issue. we have reports of hail yesterday in texas, the size of baseballs. imagine that coming down from the sky. so there is a threat of some of that today. you can see the tornado watch across parts of the panhandle into georgia. that is in effect until about 10:00 this morning. heavy rain is falling all through the carolinas and the rain is going to continue to come down heavy at times today. with the threat of, again, that hail. an isolated tornado is possible, too. other than that, it's all about the snow. a foot of snow is possible across parts of indianapolis, and that will spread eastward as we go into monday. so the snow across pennsylvania and virginia, that's not going to move in until much later on tonight. and then, we will see perhaps one to three inches of snow in the new york city area on monday, lighter snow showers, and cold weather surges into the northern plains. we should be close to 60 degrees in northwestern or

it's more than a year and a half since the 25-year-old was able to return home a free woman. >> i'm really overwhelmed right now. >> reporter: after four years in prison, she and boyfriend raffaele sollecito had their convictions overturned. but now, italian's highest court is set to decide if their conviction should be overturned. >> the prosecutors obviously are upset with the acquittal, and they're going to the supreme court to have it reviewed to say the appellate court got it wrong and that the guilty charge in the trial court was correct and that should stand. >> reporter: knox was convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering meredith kercher at the hillside villa the two women shared. prosecutors claimed knox killed the student in an attack fuelled by sex, drink, drugs and

jealousy. but her defense says the police bungled the investigation. >> i don't think the verdict is going to be overturned, only based on the fact it was a 100-page report and a lot of the problems was with the dna, and that is something that obviously can't be reversed once you mess up in a dna case, obviously, there's nothing a new trial can do. that evidence will remain the same. >> reporter: unlike the media circus that accompanied the first two trials, tomorrow's ruling will happen behind closed doors. neither knox for sollecito is likely to attend, but both will be waiting to hear if the courtroom drama is finally over. now, here's lester. >> erica, thanks. social media is abuzz this morning over the latest uproar involving charges of sexism and the tech industry. the latest brouhaha involves a female developer fired for tweeting a picture of two men making jokes at a tech conference.

amny has the story. >> reporter: when amy richards overheard two men trading what she thought were sexually offensive jokes at a tech conference, she decided to tweet this picture, writing, not cool. jokes about forking repos in a sexual way and big dongles right behind me. conference officials saw her tweet and addressed the situation. one of the men was later fired and apologized. but it was too late. the incident quickly sparked a heated debate on social media, and before she knew it, richards was fired from her job. richards' former boss, sendgrid ceo jim franklin wrote on the company's blog that richards was fired because, quote, her responsibility was to build and strengthen our developer community across the globe. it's become obvious that her actions have strongly divided the same community she was supposed to unite. legal experts say social media makes cases like this new territory. >> if the courts find that she

♪ lean on me dogs are described as man's best friend, but their love isn't just for humans. we met a couple of canines that seem to have an unbreakable bond. >> reporter: hard to believe, but eddie, the black labrador, loving the water is completely blind.

swimming is his thing, as you can see, by our camera attached to his collar. when he's had enough, there's one big problem, he can't see where to get out, crashing into a rock and falling back into the water. luckily, help is at hand. his best friend, milo, is on the bank to guide him. >> he looks like he wants to get out, and milo will run about and stand in the places where he can come out. >> reporter: i joined eddie and milo and their owner angie on a rather wet walk in wells, to see how milo works as eddie's eyes. eddie went blind last year at just six years old. he wears this mask to protect his eyes from the things he bumped into. ouch. >> trees, people. he just tends to walk into virtually everything. >> reporter: little milo keeps an eye out for his big brother, guiding them as they play. but how when milo wanders off,

eddie walks straight into a tree. but last december, perky little milo was struck down by a rare blood disorder. >> milo was very, very paulie, extremely lethargic and very pale. >> reporter: it was distressing for angie. >> we were distraught to find out how ill he was. >> reporter: without his buddy, he was lost. >> jumping off the wrong side of the bed. >> reporter: thankfully, a blood transfusion saved milo's life. >> he could have died. but even with the bld transfusion, there are risks involved. if we didn't transfuse the blood, then milo wouldn't be here now. >> he's a little hero. >> reporter: milo still recovering is back to watching over eddie, but this devoted duo do more than just look after each other. they've helped dozens of children, like chris, being fostered by angie. he spent four years with her and her dogs. >> when you feel stressed or upset or anything, the dogs --
